PEDESTRIANS could also meaningfully contribute to easing up the flow of traffic in our streets. Pedestrian lanes are provided so that pedestrians could cross streets safely. But then again, this will be possible only if motorists obey at all times the laws on pedestrian crossings.
Where sidewalks are provided, it is always also best for pedestrians to use those sidewalks. But then there are sidewalks that are used as parking spaces by motorists. What the pedestrians could do to help is report these to the RTA so that action could immediately be taken.
I have floated the idea to the RTA to reclaim sidewalks that are now being appropriated by law violators as their parking areas. A program to do this will soon be launched.
Commuters, too, can help ease up traffic. There are yellow boxes being provided on the side of many streets. Those yellow boxes are intended for loading and unloading of passengers of both private and public utulity vehicles.
Commuters can help educate drivers by refusing to embark or disembark outside of those yellow boxes. This will not only contribute much to having a smooth-running traffic but is also safe for commuters. As observed, commuters embark or disembark from motor vehicles that stop on the travel lane which obstruct the flow of traffic.
Are these behaviors difficult to correct? Maybe, maybe not, but if we want to be part of the solution, then let’s do it!
