A sneaky puppy determined to befriend the mailman slipped out of the house, a moment caught on a doorbell camera, leaving viewers in stitches.

In an October 23 Instagram video posted by user @jenjinete, a tiny Shih Tzu puppy can be seen waddling onto the porch, tail wagging rapidly, as the mailman approaches to make the day’s delivery. The postal worker kneels to give the pup a quick scratch before heading back down the walkway. But the puppy wasn’t ready to say goodbye.

The little dog leapt off the front steps and ran after the mailman into the front yard—a stark contrast to a common reaction dogs have to mail carriers. Many canines view postal workers as intruders entering their territory, prompting barking and their natural defense instincts to kick in, an article from Rover reported. But this dog was convinced they were already best friends.

The mailman paused, checking to see if anyone had noticed or knew the puppy had escaped. Luckily, at the same time this was happening, a car pulled into the driveway, but the video ended before he chatted with the driver.

Newsweek reached out to @jenjinete via Instagram for additional information and comment.

The Instagram video, which reached more than 2.3 million views as of Wednesday, instantly melted people’s hearts, with many joking they would’ve taken the pup with them.

“Puppy fits in my pocket, puppy comes with me!” said a viewer, while a second person said: “Thank goodness it wasn’t me because cutiepatootie would be in my pouch.”

Another added: “Puppy doesn’t realize puppy’s job is to bark the mailman away.”

But several users were not surprised by the puppy’s willingness to leave with a stranger: “My tzu tried to leave with my Door Dasher once. Hopped right into her car and refused to get out. We were laughing so hard. What an adorable puppy and amazing mailman!”

Shih Tzus are known for their big personalities—playful, smart and loyal. But underneath it all, they are extremely loving and affectionate. A PetMD article said they are especially great family dogs. All they want to do is be with their people.
