An unusual golden retriever with a surprising feature has stunned internet viewers—and the reason behind his unique look has finally been revealed.
In a viral Reddit post from earlier in November under the username u/Electronic-Two-8379, the poster shared a picture of their unique golden retriever, and it immediately went viral for one unusual feature—big, blue eyes.
“A golden retriever with creepy blue eyes,” the caption reads, as the owner says, “We adopted Cobalt 3 years ago, and the shelter guessed he was a golden retriever/Australian cattledog mix.
“Well, he’s a lot more interesting mix (no cattledog involved). And his character has nothing to do with golden retriever and everything to do with all other breeds in his mix.”
It turns out that the pup is a mix of multiple breeds, including golden retriever, Dalmatian, cocker spaniel, Great Pyrenees, Akita, Siberian husky, and American pit bull terrier, among others.
Mixed-breed dogs often stay in shelters longer due to lingering stigma, yet they offer many advantages that make them exceptional companions.
Experts at Lombard Veterinary Hospital say mutts are generally healthier and live longer than purebred dogs because their diverse genetic backgrounds reduce the likelihood of inherited conditions common in purebreds, leading to fewer medical issues and lower veterinary costs.
The mutts’ temperaments also tend to be more adaptable; unlike purebreds bred for specific tasks, mutts are typically easier to train, more flexible, and well suited to a variety of lifestyles. Physically and behaviorally, they are uniquely one-of-a-kind, often drawing attention for their distinctive looks and fun, easygoing personalities.
Mixed breeds can perform service and working duties just as effectively as purebreds, excelling in roles such as search and rescue, guiding the blind, and detection work.
Most importantly, adopting a mutt saves a life and helps reduce demand for unethical breeding practices.
The post quickly went viral on social media and has so far received over 1,100 upvotes and 166 comments on the platform.
One user, JunoCalliope, commented: “I guess Great Pyrenees over golden. I also guessed ACD, Dalmatian was a surprise though!”
TimeLuckBug posted: “At first I was like ‘Nah pretty not so ‘creepy’ and then I progressed further in the pics and became haunted lol [laugh out loud]. Wow that 3 percent Siberian Husky is all in the eyes lol or possibly from one of the other.”
Edmfan93 added: “I’m a dog groomer and those light colored eyes always feel unsettling.”
