Chulalongkorn University is aiming to work closer with international agencies to boost its students' employment prospects, given the challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI).
Speaking at a "Meet the Press" event, newly appointed president of Chulalongkorn University, Prof Wilert Puriwat, said his university teaches students through proper experience and critical thinking -- skills AI cannot replace.
"AI can just provide information," Prof Wilert said. "It can't provide human experiences, especially critical thinking, which are key factors required for jobs of the future."
Prof Wilert said the university has adopted AI technology to be used as a tool for achieving the final outputs resulting from critical thinking and soft skills relevant to future jobs. It will harness technology, but also devise ways in which students can stay ahead of the curve.
He said the university has focused on a student centric-based strategy. The university's updated curriculum, he said, will respond to student demands and keep up with the fast-growing world.
Prof Wilert said the university aims to work closely with global firms and international agencies, such as the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the United Nations, to elevate it to the international level.
"We would like to provide the international community to our students so that they can gain a unique experience," he said. "That is why I believe AI cannot replace us," he said.
Amid this, he said the university will establish an AI Institute to provide related courses to ensure students stay at the forefront of technological developments.
Prof Wilert said that the university would offer members of the public, such as villagers, an opportunity to work with students under the umbrella of Chula Social Enterprise to develop local products for the market.
He said 10% of revenue from the enterprise's efforts will be given to help society.
