Stella McCartney and H&M releases newest collection with sustainability at its core

Marking a 20-year return since their first collaboration, H&M (Hennes & Mauritz) officially launches a brand-new collection with British fashion label Stella McCartney set to release on May 7.

The collection was first teased at the Fashion Awards held in London the year prior, as fashion spectators anticipate what the designers have held in store for the second round coming.

In the preview with Reneé Rapp, Adwoa Aboah, and Angelina Kendall, audience expect sharply tailored coats, bejeweled tops and dresses, the iconic Falabella chain accents, six different bags, draped cocktail dresses, recycled metal jewelr and more.

Rooted in the British brand’s ethics, Stella emphasized how she kept sustainability at the core of this collaboration. "I get asked to do things like this quite often, and I, on the whole, say no because it’s not normally the right partner with the right set of belief systems or standards. But 20 years ago, I was interested in doing this," says Stella. "But I stipulated a very clear list of requirements all around sustainability. They managed, to their credit, to deliver on sustainability, and it sold out in seconds."

Materials like organic cotton, RWS Standard-certified wool, and recycled crystals were used as key components in the collection, blending archival Stella silhouettes with a sustainable, modern rendition. For coated materials, the collection opted for “feedstock” like recycled vegetable oil and industrial corn instead of synthetic formulas.

Reflecting on the notion of accessibility, Stella has created this collection to be “quite gender-fluid” and reasonably priced so that the younger audience will be able to purchase the designer pieces—impacting wardrobes around the world in a positive way.
