20/11/2025 22:14:00

Ratchanok Intanon continued her march towards her third World Tour title of the year after reaching the quarter-finals of the US$475,000 (approx 15.4 million baht) BWF Australian Open in Sydney on Thursday.

The Thai fourth seed, who ended her 10-month title drought on Sunday with a victory at the Kumamoto Masters Japan, eased past Australia's Tiffany Ho 21-7, 21-10 in the last 16 of the Super 500 event.

Ratchanok, who secured her place at the season-ending World Tour Finals next month with her successful run in Japan after a two-year absence, will next face Supanida Katethong in an all-Thai matchup.

Sixth-seeded left-hander Supanida, who is still without a title this year, overcame Huang Yu-hsun of Taiwan in two games, 21-17, 22-20.

Another women's singles player, Busanan Ongbamrungphan, failed to join her compatriots in the quarter-finals after she lost to Manami Suizu of Japan 7-21, 16-21.

Meanwhile three Thai mixed doubles pairs all came through their last-16 matches on Thursday.

Third seeds Ruttanapak Oupthong and Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat defeated Nyl Yakura and Crystal Lai of Canada 21-18, 21-10.

They will next meet compatriots Phanuwat Horbanluekit and Benyapa Aimsaard, who moved past Andika Ramadiansyah and Nozomi Shimizu of Australia 21-17, 21-17 on Thursday.

Unseeded duo Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai fought back to eliminate eighth seeds Adnan Maulana and Indah Cahya Sari Jamil of Indonesia 19-21, 21-5, 21-14.

They will be up against another seeded pair, No.4 Yang Po-hsuan and Hu Ling-fang of Taiwan, for a place in the semi-finals.

Benyapa, who is also playing in the women's doubles, exited the tournament yesterday after she and her playing partner Sabrina Sophita Wedler lost to Hu and Jheng Yu-chieh of Taiwan 16-21, 21-12, 12-21.

In other action, women's singles top seed An Se-Young of South Korea stormed past Tung Ciou-tong of Taiwan 21-7, 21-5 and will face Busanan's conqueror Suizu in the quarter-finals.

The Korean world No.1 is looking to match her 2023 record of 10 titles in a season, which would keep her on track for Kento Momota's singles record of 11.

Also, men's second seed Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan advanced with a 21-12, 21-10 win over Asher Jing Jie Ooi of Australia while Ayush Shetty of India upset fourth seed Kodai Naraoka of Japan 21-17, 21-16.
