Within a two-storey house on Toh Tuck Road is Pariposa Preschool, named after the Sanskrit term for growth and development. Here, we look at how this childcare centre and preschool in Bukit Timah grows and develops its students through child-directed learning programmes and a welcoming environment. Plus, the principal, SONIA SHARMA, shares what a day at the school looks like.
An environment that nurtures
The Pariposa team wanted to create an environment that inspires, supports and guides children on their learning journey. In the process, they aim to spread in children a love of learning and of going to school. The preschool in Bukit Timah was established in 2016 with just 11 kids, including Sonia’s two children, her 18-month-old son and 3-year-old daughter. Today, children from 18 months to 6 years of age are welcome.
The learning environment of the school allows children to explore and discover new interests, broaden their communication skills, and collaborate and engage in group problem solving. In the process, children develop decision-making skills, practice making personal choices, and develop and represent their own ideas and theories.
The nurturing environment provides children with the freedom to make choices, which the school says contributes to the children looking forward to attending school every day.
A priority for Pariposa Preschool is building strong partnerships with parents, and fostering a culture of trust and collaboration. Parents are encouraged to engage with their child’s routine, monitor progress and participate actively in school activities. The school says that together they create a supportive community that enhances each child’s educational experience.
Self-directed student learning and activities
Programmes at Pariposa are designed to cater to the unique developmental needs of each age group, ensuring a supportive and enriching environment for every child. The school believes that this early foundation is crucial for fostering a lifelong love of learning.
The curriculum emphasises self-directed, confident learning, developed according to the interests and passions of students. For example, teachers will observe the student before brainstorming ways to engage the child in the learning. They’ll also photograph activities where possible to identify learning processes.
As the curriculum unfolds, the teachers recognise moments when they can support the child by asking a thought-provoking question, sharing a story or helping in the process of seeking an answer. Through this experience, the children experience the process of interacting with and learning from their environment as they observe and contribute to life in the classroom.
The diverse teaching team at Pariposa is a mix of locals and expatriates. Besides being certified in early childhood education by the Early Childhood Development Agency, the teachers are well-equipped with the skills necessary for effective classroom management.
