Five dams in Luzon released water to mitigate the possible impact of Typhoon Uwan.

As of 8 a.m. Saturday, PAGASA reported that Angat Dam in Bulacan had three gates open, discharging water at 449 cubic meters per second (cms).

This was due to the Reservoir Water Level (RWL) being 0.33 meters higher at 210.33 meters, in comparison to the Normal High Water Level (MHWL) of 210.00 meters.

There were also 3 gates opened at 2.50 m for Ipo Dam in Bulacan, releasing water at 354.10 cms as the current RWL of 100.77 meters approaches the NWHL of 101.10 meters.

Magat Dam in Ifugao and Isabela had two gates open at four meters, releasing water at 1,058.39 cms.

Magat Dam’s current RWL of 185.51 meters was 7.49 meters away from its NHWL of 193.00 meters.

In Benguet, Ambuklao Dam and Binga Dam both had one gate open at 0.30 meters, releasing water at 55.15 cms and 47.45 cms, respectively.

Ambuklao's water level of 749.98 meters was 2.02 meters away from the NHWL of 752.00 meters, while Binga’s 573.55-meter RWL was only 1.45 meters lower than its 575.00-meter NHWL.

Earlier, PAGASA warned that Uwan would bring heavy rains over Luzon and parts of the Visayas.

Predicted to rapidly intensify into a super typhoon category, Uwan is expected to make landfall in the southern portion of Isabela or the northern portion of Aurora by Sunday evening or early Monday morning. —VBL, GMA Integrated News
