Five Luzon dams release water amid Uwan threat

Five dams in Luzon had some of their gates open on Sunday as Super Typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung-Wong) headed toward the landmass, data from PAGASA showed.

Angat Dam in Norzagaray, Bulacan had three gates open at 4.0 m at 8 a.m., releasing 462.0 cubic meters of water (cms) per second.

Its reservoir water level (RWL) was at 208.95 m at 8 a.m. Sunday, near the normal high water level (NHWL) of 210 m.

Ipo Dam, also in Norzagaray, Bulacan, likewise had three gates open on Sunday morning. The gates were open at 3.0 m, and water is being released at 406.9 cms.

The dam's RWL was at 100.05 m at 8 a.m., less than a meter away from the 101.10-m NHWL.

 

In Benguet, both Ambuklao and Binga dams had two gates open each.

The two gates of Ambuklao Dam in the municipality of Bokod were open at 1.0 m. Water is being discharged at 149.48 cms.

At 8 a.m., Ambuklao Dam had 749.48 m in its reservoir. Its NHWL meanwhile is at 752 meters.

Binga Dam in the municipality of Itogon had two gates open at 1.0 meters, discharging water at 163.27 cms.

Its RWL was at 573.20 m while its NHWL is at 575 meters.

Meanwhile, Magat Dam, which straddles the provinces of Ifugao and Isabela (in the municipality of Ramon), had two gates open at 4.0 m on Sunday morning. The dam is discharging water at 894.5 cms.

Magat Dam's RWL on Sunday was at 183.45 m at 8 a.m. Its NHWL is at 193 m.

Super Typhoon Uwan maintained its strength on Sunday morning as it continued on its track to hit the Luzon landmass.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 4 was hoisted over Norzagaray, Bulacan, among others, while TCWS No. 3 was raised over Benguet, Ifugao, and Ramon in Isabela, among others.

At 10 a.m., Uwan was last located over the coastal waters of Pandan, Catanduanes, carrying maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h near the center and gusts of up to 230 km/h, and is moving west northwestward at 30 km/h. —KG, GMA Integrated News
