Gennaro Gattuso is set to step down from his role as Italy’s national team manager, Fabrizio Romano reported on X on Thursday morning.

The 48-year-old manager appears to be taking responsibility for missing out on next summer’s World Cup.

The Italian Football Federation appointed Gattuso on 15 June 2025 as the successor to the sacked Luciano Spalletti. He, too, was unable to turn the tide.

Following the defeat on penalties against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Azzurri have missed out on the World Cup for the third time in a row.

Gattuso, who was very emotional after the match, appears set to step down from his post shortly. Italy will then once again be on the lookout for a new national team manager.

Gattuso, who made 73 international appearances during his playing career, has been working as a coach since 2013. Even before his appointment as national team manager, he had a long list of clubs to his name.

The Italian has managed FC Sion, US Palermo, OFI Crete, AC Pisa, AC Milan, Napoli, Valencia, Olympique Marseille and Hajduk Split.
