A clean energy advocate has urged the community to accelerate the shift towards renewable energy as the Philippines grapples with the growing impact of climate change.

“Renewable energy is the target around the world,” said Engr. Cerael Donngay, CEO of Greenergy Solar Corporation, during a forum organized by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) at SM City Cagayan de Oro.

Donngay pointed out the urgency of the transition, highlighting the country’s vulnerability to rising sea levels and extreme weather events.

The Philippine government’s National Renewable Energy Program (NREP) aims to harness solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal resources to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

He called on local communities, particularly Cagayan de Oro, to embrace renewable energy solutions and support policies that promote sustainable practices.

Donngay’s message resonated with the growing global consensus that renewable energy is essential for addressing climate change.

The earth is already experiencing the effects of warming temperatures, with the last decade being the hottest on record.

The United Nations has confirmed that human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels, are the primary drivers of this warming trend.

The consequences of inaction are becoming increasingly evident, with extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and disruptions to ecosystems becoming more frequent and severe.

The Philippines, like many nations around the world, is facing the stark reality of climate change. The country is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of rising sea levels, increased storm intensity, and changes in rainfall patterns.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Philippine government has made renewable energy a priority program, with the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP) outlining a strategic plan for building a strong and sustainable renewable energy sector.

The NREP emphasizes the importance of developing and using the country’s abundant renewable energy resources, including solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal.

These resources offer a clean and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the impacts of climate change. Furthermore, investing in renewable energy can create new jobs, boost economic growth, and improve energy security.

Donngay’s message served as a call to action for the Philippines, and specifically for Cagayan de Oro, to accelerate its transition to a clean energy future. He highlighted the importance of local initiatives in driving this change, emphasizing that every individual and every community has a role to play.

He urged the audience to embrace renewable energy solutions, support local businesses promoting clean energy, and advocate for policies that encourage sustainable practices.

Cagayan de Oro, with its abundant sunshine and potential for solar energy development, is well-positioned to become a leader in the renewable energy sector.

The event ramped up dialogue and collaboration, bringing together individuals, businesses, and government agencies to discuss strategies for promoting renewable energy in Cagayan de Oro.
