An ode to complementary color schemes, a pink and green kitchen color story runs throughout the open plan space belonging to Build by Sets – and Lick's Director of Interior Design and color psychologist, Tash Bradley, took to Instagram to talk through why it works so well.

In the video, Tash Bradley explains that the space is an open-plan kitchen and living room which has been decorated with pink and green throughout the whole space. From the dark green kitchen cabinets to the light pink walls, Lick's Pink 02, the space feels continuous with the two colors used in various tones throughout.
'So she’s played up and down with the weights and tones of different greens and pinks which brings everything together, so both the kitchen and the living room don’t feel separate. They feel like one space,' Tash says in the Instagram video. 'By choosing and committing to two complementary colors – this is a really great trick to bring two spaces together.'
As Tash explains, the success of the color scheme is that it's continued throughout the kitchen and living room, creating a harmonious feel, but the choice of decorating with green and pink is an especially effective one.
Since pink and green are opposites on the color wheel (complementary colors) they're two hues that naturally work well together while creating a colorful and unexpected look.
'Muted pink and green have been a classic pairing in interior design for centuries, evolving out of historical European interiors,' said interior designer at Blackberry Farm Design, Josh Maniaci. 'The blending of the warmth of pink with the freshness of the green gives a space a balanced and elegant aesthetic that feels both traditional and inviting.'
As Josh explains, decorating with pink brings warmth, while green feels reminiscent of the natural world. In this kitchen, the dark green kitchen cabinets ground the space, while the pink on the walls isn't too saturated or bright, but works almost as a neutral with its softness. This iteration is sophisticated and timeless, not leaning too colorful for a liveable feel.
That said, as with any color combination, you can of course adapt it to best suit your interior design style. If your style leans more playful, then choose brighter shades of pink and mid-greens for a colorful scheme. Alternatively, for a more refined interior, go for muted plaster pinks and the deepest, de-saturated greens. Whichever variations of green and pink you choose, you can be confident that they'll work harmoniously with each other.
