Black isn't a color you see all that often when it comes to rustic spaces that favor soft neutrals and warmer hues. However, it's one that can definitely work when used in the right areas and in the right amount – as designer Shea McGee's most recent project proves.
Situated within the Tahoe Pines kitchen is the idyllic breakfast nook designed by Shea's team at Studio McGee. The room is undoubtedly rustic and showcases Shea's love for all things organic, but the decision to bring black into her otherwise very soft scheme has us intrigued.
Proving that it's okay to mix colors on either end of the spectrum, Shea has featured black leather seating and a statement black breakfast table, despite the kitchen's rather rustic and neutral setting.
It's been proven that black is the unexpected color to use in small rooms, so it makes sense that Shea has featured a fair amount of the shade in the rather snug breakfast nook. However, we don't often see this dark, cool hue used against such a rustic backdrop.
The black furniture is an unexpected feature you wouldn't usually see in this style space, but like all great design, an element of surprise and originality never goes a miss.
In true Shea style she's decorated with neutrals and the black leather brings the perfect amount of contrast. It balances the warm tones of the wood surrounding the nook, particularly the artisanal wood shelving that features an array of farmhouse decor. Black gives the space the perfect amount of richness without steering too far from the overall organic vibe.
Staying true to the rest of the kitchen, Shea cleverly fitted a rustic wood-paneled ceiling that divides the area from the rest of the room and frames the space from above. We all know how important texture is within interior design, so to provide the breakfast nook with some variety, she's fitted black leather banquette seating to make the area feel more contemporary and luxurious. The material contrasts against the organic wood and brings a much-needed smoothness, hugging the nook and inviting guests to make themselves comfortable.
