Here we focking go again – Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro have reunited for a brand new Meet the Parents film.
The duo premiered the trailer for Focker-In-Law at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Wednesday (15 April) to laughter from the crowd.
Focker-In-Law will see Stiller’s character in the place of De Niro’s character – unsure about his son’s new relationship with a new character played by Wicked star and singer Ariana Grande.
The twist this time around is that he’s the only one who doesn’t seem to like her.
After the trailer was shown, De Niro hailed Grande as “probably the single most talented screen partner I've been lucky to share the screen with”, to which Stiller replied: “In a way, she's kind of like the new Ben Stiller.”
De Niro comedically hit back: “She got an Oscar nomination. How many of those do you have?"
When De Niro compared their careers, Stiller highlighted that his Raging Bull was probably the animated film Madagascar, and De Niro told him: "I prefer the one with the Minions,” in reference to rival franchise Despicable Me.
Focker-In-Law will bring back original cast members Teri Polo, Blythe Danner and Teri Polo, and alongside Grande, Skyler Gisondo and Beanie Feldstein have joined the cast. John Hamburg has written and directed the film.
Meet the Parents was released in 2000 – and Stiller, 60, is older than De Niro, 82, was in the original. The film was a box office smash, grossing $330m (£235m).
Two sequels followed: Meet the Fockers (2004), which starred Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand as Stiller’s eccentric parents, and Little Fockers (2010). Hamburg co-wrote all three, while Austin Powers filmmaker Jay Roach directed the first two. Paul Weitz stepped in for the third.
The film marks a return to acting for Stiller, who has spent the majority of his time recently working behind the camera.
Since taking a break from fronting movies, Stiller has been working as a producer and director on several titles, including Apple TV+’s Emmy-winning sci-fi thriller Severance, which is returning for its third season next year.
Meanwhile, two-time Oscar-winning actor De Niro is as busy as ever, with recent roles in Killers of the Flower Moon, The Alto Knights and Netflix series Zero Day. He’ll next appear in The Whisper Man, a mystery thriller based on Alex North's novel of the same name.
