Anne Hathaway is returning for the high-profile Devil Wears Prada sequel, but this film put the brakes on another follow-up film fans have been eagerly waiting for.

In 2024, it was reported that The Princess Diaries 3 was in production, with Adele Lim set to direct the return to Genovia – the world created by author Meg Cabot.

Hathaway has now shared an update on the film’s status, promising it is “100 per cent” in the works and stating that “the intention is to make it hopefully next”. Cabot has also confirmed that Robert Schwartzman and Chris Pine will reprise their roles as Hathaway’s love interests, featured in the first two films.

“We’re constantly working on it,” she told Entertainment Weekly, stating that The Devil Wears Prada 2 “cropped up unexpectedly and took over the space”.

“It became impossible to focus on both at the same time,” the Oscar-winning Les Misérables actor said, but added that her collaborators are “chopping away at the script”.

“If I learned anything from The Devil Wears Prada 2, it’s that expectations are very, very high, and if you’re going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park,” she said.

Speaking at BookCon over the weekend, Cabot said of the forthcoming film: “There is a part for everybody, because there’s a thing that happens where everyone has to show up. Robert Schwartzman‘s in it. Chris Pine obviously is in it. Although he says he’s not, but he is,” she said at the New York event.

The Princess Diaries, released in 2001, followed the Queen regent of Genovia (Julie Andrews) as she taught her granddaughter Mia (Hathaway) the ways of the throne. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, written by Bridgerton creator Shonda Rhimes, was released in 2004.

Speaking about the potential third film in 2022, Andrews, 90, said that, while she would be “happy” to return, she would have concerns.

“It’s quite a long time now since the two Diaries were done, and I’m not sure, but sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone,” she said, adding: “I don’t like it when people milk and milk and milk the subject, you know, ‘til it’s dead.”

The Devil Wears Prada 2, starring Hathaway and Meryl Streep, is released on 1 May. Hathaway can also be seen in Mother Mary, out 24 April, and later this summer, she will star in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey (17 July).
