Arsenal begin title defence in style
Arsenal launched their Premier League title defence with a comfortable 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium. The champions took control early in the 2026-27 season opener, scoring twice inside the first 23 minutes. Kai Havertz opened the scoring before Bukayo Saka quickly doubled the advantage, leaving Frank Lampard’s visitors with a difficult task. Captain Martin Odegaard added a third shortly after half-time as Mikel Arteta celebrated his 150th Premier League win as Arsenal manager.
New signing Christos Tzolis made an energetic start on the left wing and played an important role in Arsenal’s first two goals. After recovering possession from Milan van Ewijk, Tzolis helped create the move that ended with Riccardo Calafiori’s cross being swept home by Havertz in the 15th minute. Soon afterwards, Carl Rushworth could only parry Tzolis’ low delivery into Saka’s path, and the England international finished from close range. Havertz retained his place ahead of Viktor Gyokeres and rewarded Arteta’s faith with his fourth goal in four consecutive club starts.
Odegaard seals comfortable win
Coventry briefly threatened through Loum Tchaouna, whose ambitious overhead attempt dropped onto the roof of David Raya’s net. However, Arsenal remained firmly in control and nearly added another goal before the interval through Declan Rice’s curling left-footed effort. The hosts did extend their lead four minutes into the second half when Odegaard connected with Ben White’s cutback. Although the Arsenal captain scuffed his finish, Rushworth had already committed to his right and could not prevent the ball from finding the net.
Arsenal continued to press for more, with Rushworth producing saves from Myles Lewis-Skelly and Tzolis. Raya was largely untroubled until late in the match, when Jack Rudoni headed directly at the Arsenal goalkeeper from Coventry’s best opportunity. The clean sheet underlined the champions’ control, while Lewis-Skelly impressed in midfield after new signing Bruno Guimaraes was ruled out with a groin injury. The 19-year-old completed a game-high 76 passes in a composed display.
A tough return for Coventry
Coventry were playing their first Premier League match since 2001, ending a 25-year and 94-day wait for top-flight football. That gap is the longest between appearances by any club in Premier League history, but their return proved a demanding occasion against the reigning champions. Lampard’s side struggled to create sustained attacking pressure and were unable to build on Rudoni’s late chance. They will look for a stronger response when fellow promoted club Hull City visit in their next league fixture.
For Arsenal, the result continues the momentum built by their Community Shield victory over Manchester City. The Gunners went 2-0 up in a home Premier League match inside 23 minutes for the first time since December 2023, against Wolves. They also scored three goals on the opening matchday for the first time since their 3-0 win over Fulham in September 2020. Arteta’s team now travel to Aston Villa for matchday two, sitting at the top of the table once again.
