Google to give kids access to Gemini AI

Google has announced that it will allow kids to use their chatbot, Gemini AI. The tech firm revealed that Gemini AI would help kids with school homework. It also said that kids could use Gemini AI to read stories. Google advised parents to impose parental control on using the chatbot via Family Link parental controls.

Google said it will roll out Gemini apps to kids below 13. The tech firms announced the kids would be allowed to use the apps if their parents had family-managed accounts. Google clarified that the kids could use the Gemini app to help with homework. It added that kids could also use the apps to read stories. The tech firm revealed that the kids’ data will not be utilized to train future AI chatbots. It also advised parents to talk to their kids about using AI chatbots and sharing personal information.

Google allows kids to use Gemini AI

Google has announced its plans to allow kids to use Gemini AI chat in the coming week. The tech firm revealed it would allow kids under 13 to use the chatbot through parent-managed Google accounts. The firm sent an email to parents informing them of the new development.

The tech company revealed children under 13 could enable and access the chatbot using Google Family Link. It also informed parents that kids could read stories using the Gemini artificial intelligence chatbot. Google added that the kids could use the chatbot to do homework. The tech giant also noted that kids could ask the chatbot questions. Google confirmed that it will alert Parents when their kid accesses the chatbot for the first time. 

According to the search engine provider, the chatbot would be available to kids whose parents have Family Link, a service that allows families to set up Gmail and other opt-in offerings such as YouTube. Karl Ryan, Google spokesman, said that Gemini has certain protective barriers for younger users that inhibit the chatbot from generating unsafe content. 

Ryan added that when kids use Gemini AI through their parent’s Family Link account, Google will not use their data to train any AI models. He also said their move to provide kids access to Gemini complied with Federal laws regarding children’s online privacy. 

Google advises parents on Gemini AI usage

President Donald Trump urged institutions to adopt AI learning and teaching tools. The president directed educators to use artificial intelligence in the classrooms to help improve education outcomes. The Republican also created a task force he said would be responsible for implementing the new AI policies outlined in the executive order. 

UNICEF and other children’s groups warned of the risks kids could face when using artificial intelligence chatbots. The groups said AI chatbots could misinform and confuse young children. The children’s groups added that kids could be manipulated since they might not understand that the AI systems were not human. 

The tech giant noted that the chatbot could pose some risks. It said Gemini AI could make mistakes. The firm suggested that parents help their kids think critically about the Gemini AI chatbot. Google advised parents to train their children to fact-check the responses they receive from Gemini AI. 

The tech firm also advised parents to teach their kids that Gemini AI was not human. It said parents should advise their kids not to enter personal or sensitive info in the chatbot. The company revealed that it had put much effort into filtering inappropriate content. However, it was noted that children may still encounter content their parents would prefer they didn’t see.
