Olympic bronze medalist boxer Eumir Marcial is not hanging his gloves yet but he will just put them aside and wear basketball sneakers.

Marcial, who is unbeaten in seven fights as a professional boxer, has joined the Basilan Steel for the upcoming season of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL).

The MPBL is the brainchild of boxing legend Manny Pacquiao, who also played professional basketball in the PBA.

The two-time Olympian said it was an honor for him to be part of Basilan Steel.

“Life is too short, I want to take this opportunity while I can. Playing in the MPBL is one of the dreams of every basketball athlete,” Marcial said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

“When it comes to sports, there’s no limit, this is just the beginning of developing grassroots programs,” added the boxer from Zamboanga City.

With the MPBL regular season starting this month, and running until September to October, it is not clear if Marcial will take part in the men’s boxing tournament of the upcoming Asian Games in Japan. ARIC JOHN SY CUA
