OpenAI is hiring a new employee to address the growing concerns that AI may pose, and the tech giant is ready to spend a hefty sum to rope someone in.
In a recent job listing, OpenAI said it is hiring a “Head of Preparedness”. The new employee at Sam Altman's company will focus on reducing the harms associated with AI, including cybersecurity and mental health among others.
Why is OpenAI hiring a Head of Preparedness?
Calling the job a “critical role at an important time”, Sam Altman in a post on X explained why a “head of preparedness” is required at OpenAI.
“Models are improving quickly and are now capable of many great things, but they are also starting to present some real challenges. The potential impact of models on mental health was something we saw a preview of in 2025; we are just now seeing models get so good at computer security they are beginning to find critical vulnerabilities," the OpenAI CEO wrote.
In his post, Altman said that while OpenAI is growing its capabilities, we are entering a new world where a deep understanding of the nuances of how these capabilities could be abused is required. It is also important to navigate through how OpenAI could limit these downsides for both the company and the world.
“These questions are hard and there is little precedent; a lot of ideas that sound good have some real edge cases,” he said.
What is the salary?
OpenAI is ready to dole out over half a million a year for the role of the head of preparedness.
According to the website, the role offers a massive $550,000 salary, which is roughly about ₹4.94 crore.
Not just the salary, the selected candidate will also be awarded with equity of the company.
What will the candidate do?
As the head of preparedness at OpenAI, the selected candidate will be associated with the Safety Systems team and will lead the technical strategy and execution of the company's Preparedness framework.
“This will be a stressful job and you'll jump into the deep end pretty much immediately,” Sam Altman said.
Founded in 2015, OpenAI has, according to some former leaders, not been able to commit to prioritise its safe development of technology. Several leaders left the company in 2020, partly due to this reason.
