A touching social-media video showing a black cat snuggled up on a fuzzy blanket with his owner has left viewers emotional, as many realized the pair have been together for nearly two decades.

The Instagram clip was shared on Thursday by @sanchoblackcat and shows the cat relaxing and cuddling with his owner, a moment that mirrors how the two bonded years ago. The simple scene struck a chord online, highlighting the quiet comfort of a lifelong pet. The caption reads: “POV [point of view]: you got a kitten when you were 9 in 2007 and now you turn 28 in a few months and he’s still here.”

The woman behind the video, Eka Chkoidze, told Newsweek about the bond she shares with her cat, Sancho. She said that she is 27 years old and lives in Tbilisi, Georgia, where the two still share an apartment.

Sancho’s name was inspired by Sancho Panza, the loyal squire to Don Quixote. Chkoidze said the name reflects her cat’s grounding presence in her life, describing how he helps her stay present and find joy in everyday moments, something she values deeply as an artist.

Chkoidze was just 9 years old when her father brought Sancho home in 2007. Since then, the pair have rarely been apart.

Over the years, Sancho has been there through school, university, and major milestones. During the COVID period, he even sat on Chkoidze’s lap while she presented her university thesis, offering quiet comfort during a stressful moment.

Sancho was also with the family during one of the most-frightening times of their lives. In 2008, during Russia’s invasion of Georgia, Chkoidze and her family, including their cat, had to hide in the mountains and could not return home to Tbilisi for a time.

“That experience, coupled with my Georgian, Polish, and Ukrainian roots, made Russia’s further aggression in 2014 and the full-scale invasion in 2022 especially painful for us,” Chkoidze said. “Through it all, Sancho has been a source of emotional support and strength, helping me cope with challenges and maintain my mental health.”

The cat has played a role in her creative life as well. When Chkoidze was a child taking piano lessons, Sancho would sit quietly beneath the piano, listening to the music. Today, he curls up next to her easel while she paints or stays close when she reads, continuing to be part of her artistic routine.

In 2024, Chkoidze chose to honor their bond with a tattoo dedicated to Sancho, ensuring that a piece of him will always be with her.

Now, the pair continue to live together in Tbilisi, spending their days cuddling, supporting each other through difficult moments, and celebrating happier ones. Sancho is set to turn 19 on May 13 this year, a milestone that has made many viewers emotional.

The video quickly went viral, receiving more than 80,000 views and over 10,000 likes on Instagram, as people around the world reflected on the rare and powerful connection between a woman and the cat who has been by her side for almost her entire life.

One user, Hideshi14, commented: “His eyes are filled with love and vitality.”

Vhr_chino added: “What’s his diet? He looks amazing!”
