A TikTok creator who claims to have traveled to 50 countries is urging passengers to rethink the way they pack their carry-on bags in favor of a folding method.
In a recent video, @mio.travel demonstrates what he calls a space-saving strategy: the KonMari folding method, popularized by organizing consultant Marie Kondo.
This method involves folding clothes compactly and storing them vertically rather than stacking them.
“Stop using packing cubes,” the on-screen text urges travelers. “You will fit so much more into your case by using the KonMari method…it also keeps your clothes wrinkle-free.”
“Once you memorize it, it becomes second nature and saves you money on packing cubes!” the user claims.
The KonMari website explains that the technique centers on folding clothes neatly and standing them upright.
“By folding clothes neatly and standing them up vertically—rather than stacking them or worse, piling them in a chair—you’ll prevent wrinkles, save space and express gratitude for every item that sparks joy,” emphasizing Kondo’s mission statement.
The site adds, “Clothing is the first tidying category of the KonMari Method for a good reason: We live in it.”
Users React
In the comments under @mio.travel’s video, viewers debated whether abandoning packing cubes entirely is the best approach.
One TikTok user suggested combining strategies, writing, “Do this into compression cubes, then you’ll get it even more compact.”
Another agreed on the possibility of combining techniques, saying that this “sounds like a ‘why not both?’ situation.”
A third commenter offered a different technique altogether: “For clothes, I keep them open and flat, jeans fold in half—I’ve noticed I can pack more with that.”
The discussion reflects a broader trend among travelers seeking to avoid checked-bag fees and long waits at baggage claim by flying carry-on only.
In addition to the KonMari method, seasoned travelers often recommend hybrid packing strategies—rolling soft items like T-shirts and leggings while folding structured pieces such as blazers and jeans to reduce wrinkles and bulk.
Other commonly shared tips include stuffing shoes with socks or chargers to maximize unused space, wearing bulky items like jackets and sneakers on the plane, and decanting toiletries into silicone pouches to reduce wasted room.
Packing Hacks
Compression packing cubes, including vacuum-seal styles, remain popular among travelers who want to shrink clothing volume further.
When these methods cause wrinkles, travel-size wrinkle release sprays may just save the day for many vacationers.
Weight distribution also plays a role. Placing heavier items near the wheels of a carry-on can help prevent shifting and make the bag easier to maneuver through airports.
Many bags are designed with organizational compartments to help easily distribute weight and maximize space.
Choices, Choices
While this TikTok user frames his advice as a money-saving alternative to buying packing cubes, the comment section suggests many travelers see packing as less of a strict rule and more of a personal system refined through trial and error.
For some, vertical folding is the key to fitting everything into a small suitcase. For others, a mix of folding, rolling and compression offers the best results.
As airlines continue to tighten baggage allowances and fees remain a concern for frequent flyers, carry-on optimization has become its own corner of travel culture—one where even the way you fold a T-shirt can spark debate.
