Billy Joel announced Tuesday that he is postponing four months of his "Billy Joel in Concert" tour due to a "medical condition."

Why It Matters

Billy Joel has been performing his hit songs all over the world for decades, but a recent concert in Connecticut didn't go as planned. The 75-year-old singer was on stage at Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino on Saturday, February 22, when he fell during his performance.

At one point during the show, Joel got up from his piano and started playing with the microphone stand while performing "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me." Toward the end of the song, he grabbed the stand and flung it in the air, but appeared to lose his balance, ending up on the ground.

A few people in the audience shared videos on social media. Some people took to TikTok to react to Joel's fall, with many concerned that he had injured himself.

"Oh my gosh he looks like he was hurt," one person wrote.

"That fall at the end had me worried. I saw him a couple years ago and he's still got it.. sounds great and he's having a great time...maybe just stay on your two feet, Billy," a third comment read.

"Dangerous fall being 75," another TikTok user weighed in.

What to Know

Tuesday's statement noted that Joel, 75, "is expected to make a full recovery" and that his tour will resume on July 5, 2025, at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh.

"The current tour will be postponed for four months to allow him to recover from recent surgery and to undergo physical therapy under the supervision of his doctors," a statement on his Instagram page read.

All purchased tickets will automatically be valid for the rescheduled shows.

In his own statement, Joel wrote, "While I regret postponing any shows, my health must come first. I look forward to getting back on stage and sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans. Thank you for your understanding."

Billy Joel's Career in Music

Emerging in the early 1970s, Joel gained widespread recognition with his breakthrough album "Piano Man" (1973), which featured the iconic title track that remains one of his signature songs. Throughout his career, Joel released a string of commercially successful and critically acclaimed albums, including "The Stranger" (1977), "52nd Street" (1978), and "Glass Houses" (1980).

His songwriting prowess and ability to blend rock, jazz, and classical influences led to timeless hits such as "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," "Just the Way You Are," "Uptown Girl," "We Didn't Start the Fire," and "New York State of Mind." Although he stopped recording pop music after "River of Dreams" (1993), his legacy continues through his live performances and ongoing residency at Madison Square Garden.

Joel's musical achievements have been widely recognized with numerous awards and honors. He has won six Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for 52nd Street, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999. His influence on American music was further acknowledged with the Kennedy Center Honors in 2013 and the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song in 2014. Joel has also sold over 160 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time.

His residency at Madison Square Garden, which began in 2014, is one of the longest-running and most successful concert series in history.
