Dog owners have long suspected their pets know when they are having a bad day. Now, scientists may have an explanation.
New research published on August 10 in iScience, a Cell Press journal, has revealed that dogs’ brains respond differently to human facial expressions, including happiness, anger, fear and sadness.
Researchers used brain scans to study pet dogs as they looked at photographs of people displaying different emotions. The dogs’ brains responded differently depending on the expression they were shown, suggesting they are doing more than simply categorizing a face as positive or negative.
Previous research had shown that dogs can distinguish happy faces from negative ones, but it was unclear whether they could distinguish between different negative emotions. The new findings suggest they can process some of those emotions differently, particularly fear compared to anger and sadness.
Dogs showed different patterns of brain activity when looking at fearful faces compared to angry or sad faces. The researchers describe this as the first evidence that dogs can distinguish between specific negative facial expressions, rather than simply sorting human faces into broad positive and negative categories.
But why might fear stand out? One possibility is that fear carries particular biological importance because it can signal potential dangers, researchers Raúl Hernández-Pérez and Laura Cuaya told Newsweek via email.
Previous research has also found that dogs respond differently to human odors associated with fear and happiness. While the current study looked at facial expressions rather than smells, the findings raise the possibility that human fear signals may be particularly important to dogs across different senses.
The findings could help explain why dogs often seem to know when something is wrong with their owners.
“Humans are really good at picking up small details on the face, and so are dogs,” Hernández-Pérez of the University of Vienna said in a statement. “By studying their brains, we can understand what adaptations have developed to support their remarkable social and emotional understanding of humans.”
How Dogs Respond to Human Emotions
The researchers first showed eight dogs photographs of unfamiliar people with happy or neutral expressions while scanning their brains. Happy faces triggered increased activity in areas linked to cognitive processing and reward.
Specifically, the temporal cortex and caudate nucleus became more active when the dogs viewed happy faces. Cuaya said the team was particularly surprised to see the caudate nucleus involved with processing happy human faces. In dogs, previous research has linked the region to rewards including food, praise and the scent of a familiar person.
Because the caudate nucleus is associated with reward processing, its activity suggests that even a happy face belonging to an unfamiliar person may have a positive affective component for dogs, although researchers cannot directly measure the animals’ subjective experience.
The team then expanded the experiment to include faces expressing happiness, anger, fear and sadness. Using machine-learning techniques to analyze the brain scans, researchers identified patterns associated with the different expressions.
The dogs’ responses to happy faces could be distinguished from their responses to the three negative expressions. But the researchers also found that fearful faces produced a different pattern of brain activity than angry or sad faces.
There was no clear distinction between the dogs’ responses to angry and sad faces.
This means the dogs may not necessarily understand human emotions in the same way people do. Instead of simply categorizing human faces as “good” or “bad,” their brains appear to show distinct responses to some specific emotional expressions.
Dogs May Be Watching More Closely Than You Think
The findings provide another piece of evidence that dogs are highly attuned to human behavior.
“While we cannot say that a dog looks at a fearful face and understands in a human-like conceptual sense, the results indicate that their brains are doing more than simply responding to basic visual properties of the photographs,” Cuaya said. “They contain information that differentiates between some specific human emotional expressions.”
The dogs were shown still photographs of unfamiliar people rather than interacting with their owners in real-life situations. In everyday life, dogs have access to many more clues about how a person is feeling.
So, when a dog comes over after a rough day, it may be picking up on a combination of subtle signals rather than simply recognizing that its owner looks sad.
The researchers said future work will investigate how dogs combine facial expressions with other information, including vocalizations, body language and scent.
Does Your Dog Actually Know When You’re Sad?
Dogs’ ability to understand human social cues may be connected to their long history alongside people.
Over thousands of years of domestication, dogs developed social skills that helped them communicate and cooperate with humans. Being able to pay attention to our expressions and other emotional signals may have helped dogs successfully navigate their lives alongside people.
Behavioral research has found that some dogs change their behavior when a person is sad or upset, but those real-world situations provide many more emotional cues than the photographs used in this study.
The study was relatively small, involving just 12 dogs, and all of the animals were pets living in homes, meaning they had extensive experience interacting with humans. The findings may not necessarily apply to dogs with very different experiences, such as free-ranging or street dogs, and more work is needed to understand how canines interpret human emotions in different situations.
Still, the findings could help explain something dog owners have noticed for years: dogs are sensitive to human emotions.
Your dog may not understand sadness, fear or happiness exactly as you do, but its brain appears to be remarkably tuned in to the emotional signals on your face.
“Emotions are a powerful channel of communication, and they become even more meaningful when that communication works in both directions,” Cuaya said.
