There has been a lot of good news coming out of the CinemaCon 2026 presentation in Las Vegas, but Tom Cruise making another “Top Gun” movie might just be the best announcement of them all.
Cruise had audiences on the edge of their seats back in 2022 with “Top Gun: Maverick,” a legacy sequel to the original “Top Gun” from 1986.
In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, Cruise’s passion for the movies and the incredible word-of-mouth promotion for “Top Gun: Maverick” helped to bring audiences back to theaters in 2022, and it made a whole lot of money in the process — $1.496 billion to be precise.
There have been rumors of a sequel for some time now, but we finally have official confirmation that the third film in the series is in the works.
As per a report from Variety, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has now given the project his seal of approval, and it’s said Tom Cruise will return to the role of Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell once more.
Paramount has been developing the project for the past two years, with Ehren Kruger working on a script. Now, the cat is out of the bag and “Top Gun 3” is definitely moving ahead.
It is not known at this stage exactly who will join Cruise this time, though. The likes of Miles Teller, Glen Powelll, Monica Barbaro, and Lewis Pullman all had key roles in “Top Gun: Maverick” and the door could well be open for their return, too.
After turning mentor last time around, Cruise’s character proved himself a hero once more by training the next generation of Top Gun pilots. Where the character goes next is anyone’s guess… for now.
