McDonald's is gearing up for a major seasonal hiring push, announcing plans on Monday to recruit "up to 375,000 restaurant employees" across the United States this summer.
Why It Matters
With an estimated 150,000 people currently employed by McDonald's across its restaurants and corporate offices, the announcement represents one of the most ambitious hiring pushes in the company's history.
What To Know
The announcement coincides with an event at a restaurant near Columbus, Ohio, where McDonald's USA President Joe Erlinger is being joined by U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer.
The effort to hire nearly 400,000 employees this summer follows McDonald's announcement in late 2023 that it plans to expand its U.S. footprint with 900 new locations by 2027. In its 2024 annual report, McDonald's said it was on track to reach 50,000 restaurants globally by the end of 2027.
To manage the seasonal surge in business, McDonald's commonly launches summer hiring campaigns. Notable examples include efforts to recruit 250,000 restaurant employees in 2017 and 260,000 in 2020.
In addition to discussing the new hiring push and its significance for the company and the American labor market, McDonald's said that the event would also be used to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its Archways to Opportunity program. Since its inception in 2015, McDonald's said it has invested over $240 million in the program, supporting over 90,000 employees in earning high school diplomas, receiving college tuition assistance, learning English as a second language, and accessing education and career advising services.
What People Are Saying
McDonald's USA President Joe Erlinger: "I often think about the time I spent working in our restaurants as a General Manager, and it was immediately clear that crew members are the heart and soul of this brand. They go above and beyond to take care of our customers, and it's our job to take care of and create opportunities for them. When you put on an apron for a shift at McDonald's, you're building skills you'll carry with you for life."
In a late-2023 announcement, McDonald's said it "will accelerate the pace of restaurant openings to fully capture the increased demand being driven through the M-C-D growth pillars."
"It will continue to build on its industry-leading development progress by targeting expansion to 50,000 restaurants by the end of 2027," the announcement continued. "This will mark the fastest period of growth in Company history, with an expected run rate of 1,000 gross openings across the U.S. and International Operated Markets in 2027."
What Happens Next
McDonald's has held up its Archways to Opportunity program as an added incentive to assist with the hiring initiative. The company has said that its drive toward 50,000 restaurants in 2027 will usher in the "fastest period of growth in [the] brand's history."
