Miley Cyrus has been spotted stepping back into the world that launched her career, as fans shared photos and videos online of the singer filming what appears to be the upcoming Hannah Montana 20th anniversary special.

Photos posted on Reddit quickly gained traction this week, with users reacting to images of Cyrus on a set reminiscent of the 2006 Disney Channel series. The show followed Miley Stewart, a regular teenager living a double life as pop star Hannah Montana, and became a defining hit for a generation of viewers.

Disney+ confirmed the special in a press release, announcing that the “Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special” will debut on March 24, exactly 20 years after the original premiere.

Like many classic Disney Channel shows, the program will be filmed in front of a live studio audience and will feature an in-depth interview with Cyrus hosted by Alex Cooper.

According to a previous Newsweek report, fans may recognize “reconstructed versions of some of the series’ most memorable sets—including the Stewart family living room and Hannah’s iconic walk-in closet.”

For many fans, the closet was more than just a set piece.

Hannah’s sparkling jackets, sequined tops and layered accessories became central to the character’s identity, fueling a wave of merchandise that ranged from wigs to tour-inspired apparel. At the height of the show’s popularity, branded clothing and accessories filled Disney Store shelves.

Two decades later, the nostalgia remains strong: Zara is now selling a Hannah Montana-inspired T-shirt modeled after the show’s original style, retailing on its website as part of a Disney collaboration.

Cyrus addressed the anniversary in a statement shared in a Disney+ press release, saying: “‘Hannah Montana’ will always be a part of who I am. What started as a TV show became a shared experience that shaped my life and the lives of so many fans, and I’ll always be thankful for that connection.”

“The fact that it still means so much to people all these years later is something I’m very proud of. This ‘Hannahversary’ is my way of celebrating and thanking the fans who’ve stood by me for 20 years.”

As news of the special spread, fans expressed a mix of excitement and humor.

One Reddit user joked, “Wait, why is Miley Cyrus announcing Hannah Montana’s special? Why didn’t Hannah announce it herself? Is Hannah even involved in this project?” referencing fans’ commitment to the charade that Hannah Montana was a real star—both on and off television screens.

Others were more skeptical, with one writing, “It’s an interview featuring a recreated set and archived footage… that’s great and all but I’d much rather there be a concert special or a special edition album release featuring the re-recorded versions of the songs.”

A third added nostalgically, “Wow, it’s been 20 years already—enjoy your youth, kids! It’ll be gone before you know it.”

The Disney+ announcement also highlighted the franchise’s scale, noting that the Emmy-nominated series spawned 14 platinum and 18 gold albums worldwide.

Ahead of the special, the platform is promoting a dedicated “Hannah Montana” collection and a nonstop stream of all four seasons, the feature film and the concert special, according to Disney+.

With filming now underway and fans closely watching for glimpses of sequins and blonde wigs, Cyrus’ return to her pop alter ego marks a full-circle moment for a show that helped define mid-2000s pop culture.
