Rescue Terrier Mix Labelled As ‘Unsellable’ for One Heartbreaking Reason

A 3-year-old terrier mix named Sprinkles is searching for a forever home after being heartbreakingly labeled “unsellable” by a breeder—all because of a minor imperfection.

According to an Instagram post shared by @bubbles.petsrescue, Sprinkles was removed from the market due to an old injury.

The caption explains: “One of his toes appears to have been broken in the past and healed incorrectly. Unfortunately, nothing can be done about it now, but it does not affect his quality of life in any way. He walks, runs, and plays normally, and you can barely even notice it.”

The rescue in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, added that the injury suggests Sprinkles may have suffered an accident or even abuse earlier in life.

When he first arrived at the shelter, he was withdrawn and heartbroken. Today, he’s thriving and his sweet personality shining through. The shelter’s post states: “He’s incredibly affectionate, gentle, and has a way of settling right into your heart.”

Why Dogs Like Sprinkles Struggle to Find Homes

Research shows that dogs with even minor medical issues often face longer waits for adoption. A 2021 study published in Anthrozoös surveyed over 750 potential adopters and found that dogs with medical conditions were perceived as less adoptable than healthy dogs, though still more appealing than those with behavioral problems.

Interestingly, dogs with an abuse history were viewed more favorably than those with medical or behavioral challenges—possibly because people feel compassion for their past suffering. The study also revealed demographic differences: younger adopters and those with prior dog experience were more open to adopting dogs with special needs.

Sprinkles’ Personality and Needs

Despite his tough past, Sprinkles remains a gentle soul who just wants love. The rescue is hoping to find him a permanent home—or at least a foster family—before the holidays. The post states he is:

The Bigger Picture

Sprinkles’ story highlights a troubling reality in the pet industry. According to Humane World, there are an estimated 10,000 puppy mills operating in the United States. Each year, roughly 2.6 million puppies are sold, many from these mills. Breeders may or may not hold a USDA license, as not all are required to have one.

Meanwhile, shelters across the country are overflowing. About 25 percent of dogs in animal shelters are purebred, proving that even pedigree pups aren’t immune to abandonment.
