Jim Carrey’s recent appearance at the 51st César Awards in Paris has sparked a wave of online speculation after clips from the event circulated online, with some fans questioning whether the actor on stage was really him.

Carrey, 64, stepped out to accept a lifetime achievement honor at the French ceremony, marking a rare public appearance after years largely out of the spotlight.

In a clip shared widely online, Carrey appeared upbeat, telling reporters, “Oh, loved it, loved it. It’s so beautiful… It was just a brilliant evening, you know, really brilliant evening.”

But as footage spread, discussions online began gaining traction, with users dissecting his facial features and demeanor, claiming that it was not the star at all, but a doppelganger.

Some commenters suggested cosmetic procedures could explain the change.

Experts Weigh in

In a TikTok video analyzing Carrey’s appearance, eye surgeon Dr. Toyo hypothesized: “You could see that he’s had a blepharoplasty, so he had excess skin of the upper lids pushing down.”

He added, “The problem is, is that he has had filler, hyaluronic acid filler, to the orbital area,” warning that “when you put filler in that area, it causes an edema.”

He cautioned viewers: “Do not do filler in this orbital area because you’re asking for trouble, and as you can see, it makes you look just weird.”

A plastic surgeon, Dr. Anthony Youn, also weighed in on TikTok, comparing older photos of Carrey to current footage.

“He appears to have had an endoscopic brow lift as evidenced by his brows being higher than before and his hairline being back a little bit,” Youn said.

He also suggested Carrey “may have had some Botox injected into his forehead and an upper blepharoplasty.”

Youn concluded: “So either Jim Carrey has had a considerable amount of facial plastic surgery or this isn’t Jim Carrey, and it is a doppelganger. Or maybe he’s playing some type of trick on us.”

‘Really scares me’

On TikTok, some fans embraced the more conspiratorial angle.

One TikTok user wrote, “That’s not Jim Carrey that’s John Carrier.”

Another asked bluntly, “Who is this man?”

A third commented, “I’m a HUGE fan of Jim Carrey, like huge huge. And I don’t believe in conspiracy theories but damn, this one really scares me… that’s not him, he is unrecognizable.”

Others pointed out that lighting, aging and a trimmed beard could all contribute to a different look. Carrey has kept a relatively low profile in recent years, focusing on painting and writing, which has meant fewer public appearances for comparison.

Fueling the Fire

Some of the conspiracy theories have been given even more publicity by social media stars fueling the fire.

A post by Tiktoker Alexis Stone hinted that he used a mask to go out in public dressed as Carrey, captioning it: “Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris.” Also included was a photo of an alleged mask worn by the star. But as many comments pointed out, the photo appeared to be AI-generated.

Despite the online debate, major outlets covering the César Awards reported on Carrey’s acceptance of the honor without raising doubts about his identity.

For now, the viral speculation appears to be driven largely by social media users parsing short video clips frame by frame critiquing his hair, skin and even his eye color—while Carrey himself has not publicly addressed the claims.
