A pet owner was left stunned after learning the true breed mix of their puppy, following DNA test results that contradicted everything they thought they knew.
In a viral Reddit post shared on Tuesday under the username u/KH33T4H, the dog owner posted photos of their pup, Apollo, alongside the surprising results of his DNA test. For months, the owner had believed Apollo was either a Weimaraner or at least part-Weimaraner. Instead, the test revealed that the dog is actually a mix of Labrador retriever and Great Dane.
The results shared in the post said that Apollo is 51.4 percent Labrador retriever and 48.6 percent Great Dane. The reveal came as a shock to the owner, who had been confident in their original guess, based on Apollo’s appearance.
The Reddit post included multiple photos showing Apollo at different stages of his young life. The first four pictures show him when he was around 3 to 4 months old, while the final four images are more recent, with Apollo now nearly 7 months old.
The caption attached to the post makes it clear just how unexpected the results were. “A Bit Shocked,” the caption says.
The owner wrote: “We were nearly certain our boy was some flavor of weim. First 4 pics were when he was about 3-4 months. Last 4 are more recent he’s almost 7 months now. Our guess was weim / great dane, so we were at least half right!! I’m not disagreeing with the results at all, but I am kind of shocked.”
While the owner isn’t disputing the accuracy of the DNA test, the post highlights how confident they were in their initial assumption. Their belief that Apollo was a Weimaraner appears to have been based entirely on his looks as a young puppy, which ultimately turned out to be misleading.
The post quickly caught the attention of other Reddit users, many of whom shared their reactions in the comments. The viral thread has so far received almost 1,000 upvotes and 173 comments, showing strong engagement from the Reddit community.
One user, Lizzyote, commented: “I’ve never seen such a silver dog that didn’t have weim. Those paws…that kid is gonna be big. Edit: I mean this kind of silver specifically, not just blue. And I’m only saying I have not seen any, not that they don’t exist.”
Zephyreblk said: “I definitely see how you could think of a weimaraner, was also my first tough until I saw the face and the white spot, then lab came in my head. Great Dane makes sense.”
MegaPiglatin added: “Oh my goodness, he looks like an adorable goof! How greedy is that belly?”
