Dog Owner Checks Daycare Camera—Not Prepared for What She Sees Worker Doing

A dog owner checking in on the daycare camera expected a routine glimpse of playtime, but instead found a moment that left her doing a double-take.

In a March 31 TikTok video posted to the account @maxpthecavapoo, a pet parent pulled up the doggy daycare livestream to check in on her cavapoo, Max. The pet cam at a Dogtopia in Texas allows owners to see the facility and what their dogs might be up to while they’re away. Typically, the footage shows pups chasing each other or playing with toys. This time, however, she spotted what appeared to be a staff member lying on the ground among a group of dogs, seemingly asleep.

Instead of playing, the dogs had formed a circle around the employee, almost as if protecting him, while one small dog perched comfortably on his back. The unexpected scene left her “speechless,” not because he appeared to be asleep, but because all the canines let him alone.

But the owner assured Newsweek that the employee was never actually asleep. Rather, this has long been his way of interacting with the dogs. In the caption, she even described it as a “dream job.”

“I was just shocked my dog was so calm since he’s usually very energetic,” she said. “He’s the one near his right hip.”

Dipa, owner of Dogtopia of Frisco Preston, confirmed to Newsweek that she is aware of the video’ circulating online, but said this type of interaction between employees is common, especially in rooms with smaller dogs.

“When you have a crowd of pups that you are really used to seeing regularly, our coaches like to sit, read, sing and talk, and also in this case, get down to their level and really interact with them,” she said. “As you can see, the dogs are really calm and relaxed due to the fact that they know the coach very well.”

Dipa added that the dogs’ calm demeanor reflects the trust and familiarity they have with the staff. This team member featured is a long-time, trusted employee who was neither unwell nor fatigued, as the scene quickly sparked questions among viewers about whether he had dozed off on the job.

The employee remained still, not wanting to disturb the dog who had climbed onto his back, Dipa said. He chose to sit and lie down to connect with the canines, reflecting the team’s dedication.

“Moments like these reflect the genuine bonds our team builds with the dogs in their care,” Dipa said. “Creating a calm, positive environment where each dog feels secure is at the heart of what we do every day. We’re incredibly proud of our dedicated team members who bring patience, compassion, and a true love of dogs to their roles.”

Research published in the journal Animals suggests that dogs are highly sensitive to the people around them, and interactions with familiar humans can have a profound calming effect. In environments that might otherwise be stimulating—like a busy dog daycare—positive, repeated contact with a trusted caregiver can help dogs feel secure and reduce stress.

Studies indicate that when dogs know and recognize a handler, they are more likely to display relaxed behavior and remain settled, even amid groups of other dogs. This familiarity and trust help explain why the pups in the viral Dogtopia video appeared so calm around the employee, who regularly interacts with them at their level.

Viewer Reactions

With over 3.4 million views, 582,300 likes and 2,032 comments on TikTok as of Monday, a majority of viewers were obsessed over the dogs’ precious reaction to protect their “sleeping” pack member, but others worried he could be reprimanded for the video.

“Not them setting up a protection perimeter,” commented one, while another said: “And you know they’re serious because ain’t none of them running around.”

A third wrote: “They all went into group protection mode. Everyone has their spot, too. He is part of their pack.”
