Two-defending women’s halfpipe champion Chloe Kim went for a historic feat at the Winter Olympics, attempting to win another gold medal.

At Thursday’s event, she attempted to become the fifth snowboarder to attempt a three-peat. It would be the first time either a male or female snowboarder won three consecutive Olympic gold medals in a single event.

Her opening performance was outstanding, with Kim achieving an 88 score in that first run on the halfpipe. Among the stellar moves that she landed were a backside 720 and switch double cork 1080, before finishing perfectly with an inverted 540 to put her atop the leaderboard.

She had plenty of supportive spectators in the crowd to watch her attempt the historic feat. In addition to her family members and boyfriend, Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns, musician and Olympic personality Snoop Dogg was there, along with snowboarding legend Shaun White.

Garrett and Snoop wore custom jackets featuring Kim’s face to support the United States snowboarding phenomenon.

While each snowboarder competing in the event received three runs on the halfpipe to achieve a top score, Kim took over the top of the leaderboard on her first run, looking primed to win another gold medal.

For a while, she was ahead of Japan’s Mitsuki Ohno in second (85 score) and Japan’s Rise Kudo in third (81.75 score) on the women’s halfpipe final leaderboard.

However, Korea’s Choi Gaon took the surprising lead in her third run with a score of 90.25, pushing Kim down to second.

Various commenters reacted to what Chloe Kim did in her opening performance, as they shared comments on X about the impressive moves.

“ELITEEEEE!!!! THE SWITCH DOUBLE CORK 1080!!!” one commenter wrote.

“It’s Chloe Kim’s world and we just live in it 🥰,” another commenter said on X.

“Halfpipe ain’t no joke, I’ve seen too many crashes but damn Chloe Kim is so good❤️,” an X commenter said.

Chloe Kim’s second run featured a backside 720, followed by a switch method air 12 feet out and a double cork 1080. She tried a second double cork 1080 but landed a bit too far down in the transition’s trough, not landing it perfectly enough.

The second run didn’t improve on her 88 score due to her bad landing at the end. Her third run ended with another failed attempt at the double cork move she attempted to land in her second run.

With that, Gaon claimed the gold medal in her Olympics debut, and Kim took home a silver medal, followed by Mitsuke Ohno, who claimed bronze.

The feat of winning three consecutive gold medals continues to elude Winter Olympics snowboarders, and one has to wonder if any competitor will ever achieve it.
