After years of believing she had adopted a golden retriever, a Reddit user tested her dog only to find that out of all the breeds in his DNA, golden retriever isn’t even in the mix.
In a Reddit post shared on Friday under the username u/Badwolf61720, the poster shared pictures of her dog, Shiloh, a long-haired yellow dog that looks just like a golden retriever—though is anything but.
“Not a golden retriever at all,” she wrote in the post, explaining that the pup is actually 56.5 percent Labrador retriever, 16.7 percent Great Pyrenees, 10.4 percent Rottweiler, 10 percent Komondor, and 6.4 percent Anatolian shepherd.
“We adopted our giant ‘golden retriever’ 8 years ago. We are surprised he’s not a golden at all, and shocked he has rottweiler in him. We never would have guessed! We assumed golden and Pyrenees.
“He’s a super sweet giant who could run miles until he slowed down due to age (maybe 9 or 10 years old?),” the caption reads.
Besides revealing your pup’s origins, a DNA test can also reveal any potential health risks linked to it.
Many tests include screenings for genetic disorders, which can help you understand conditions your dog may be at risk for or carry. These results, however, should be reviewed with a veterinarian and not used alone for medical decisions.
DNA testing can also shed light on personality traits, offering insight into your pup’s unique quirks.
At the time of writing, the post had received over 1,400 upvotes on the platform, and users can’t believe the unexpected results.
One user, Happuning, commented: “You got the wrong retriever, OP! At least he can still retrieve. Haha.
“Komondor is a cool find. I could see the pyr. I was wondering if maybe there was some chow or something, but instead, you’ve just got a cool mix of breeds in this gorgeous guy!”
RaisinCurrent6957 said: “Lol I could tell the Pyrenees right away. That cinnamon roll tail!! Definitely looks mostly yellow lab though. She’s a beautiful baby!”
Reallytrulytrue added: “I’ve had goldens for 30 + years and I am shocked he’s not one! I have known purebreds his size.”
