Owner Realizes It’s ‘Suspiciously Quiet’—Not Ready for What Puppy Is Doing

A New York City dog owner shared the moment she discovered what her puppy had been doing after an unusually quiet few minutes—only to find him happily chewing the side of a wooden table.

In the video, Divyanka walks into the room to see her puppy, Jio, gnawing at the furniture and appearing thoroughly pleased with his unexpected snack. The brief silence, she said, was the first sign something was amiss.

“He is currently 19 weeks old and is a cockapoo,” Divyanka told Newsweek. “I was in the other room and it was probably 3–4 minutes of silence which never happens with a puppy. I was pretty stunned as this was the first time he was chewing on this side table so it caught me off guard.”

She added that when she questioned him, Jio appeared to “argue back,” reacting as though he were defending himself.

“The reaction of his arguing as if he’s defending himself is just too funny,” she said, explaining why she decided to share the clip with her Instagram followers. “I have been sharing Jio’s journey at home on Instagram and this was too funny of a moment to not share.”

On Instagram, the moment has been viewed more than 270,000 times and people couldn’t get enough. In the video, the owner wrote: “When it’s suspiciously quiet and you realize you haven’t seen your puppy in a minute…”

In the comments, fellow dog owners chimed in, with many all too aware of what silence means when raising a puppy.

“Omg its just that moment i know something terrible is happening,” wrote another dog owner. While another commenter wrote: “Never trust silence.”

Why Puppies Like To Chew

Puppy chewing, experts say, is a normal developmental behavior—particularly at Jio’s age. According to the American Kennel Club, puppies explore the world by putting objects in their mouths and often chew to relieve discomfort while teething. “Puppies understand the world around them by putting things into their mouth,” the AKC explains, noting that chewing and mouthing are natural behaviors and not signs of aggression or misbehavior.

Teething can last up to six months, during which puppies may seek out furniture legs, shoes or even table edges to soothe sore gums. Redirecting that behavior toward appropriate chew toys and supervising young dogs during free time are commonly recommended ways to protect both pets and furniture.

For Divyanka, the damage to the table was secondary to the humor of the moment. What began as a few suspiciously quiet minutes quickly turned into a relatable snapshot of puppy life—one that resonated with fellow dog owners familiar with the risks of silence when raising a curious, teething pup.
