Pet cameras are a useful way for owners to monitor their dogs while they’re away, but internet users are obsessed with a golden retriever using one to check on his owner instead.
Dog owner Allie shared a hilarious video on TikTok (@allie_marieeee) showing the surprising sight she was greeted to on the pet cam. Instead of Allie checking on her golden retriever, it was actually the other way around as the dog could be seen peering directly at the camera, as though monitoring his owner instead.
As the camera lens moved around, it showed the golden retriever was standing up close and in direct view. The caption layered over the video reads: “you check the dog cam and realize you’re the one being watched.”
While he may have misunderstood the purpose of the pet cam, internet users can’t get enough of the dog’s keen attempt at surveillance. Since the video was shared on TikTok on January 11, it has gone viral with over 587,600 views and more than 119,500 likes at the time of writing.
Newsweek has contacted @allie_marieeee via TikTok for comment. We could not verify the details of the video.
When Allie checked the pet cam that day, she probably wasn’t expecting to be confronted by the golden retriever’s face up close. She certainly saw the amusing side at the time though, as the caption alongside the clip joked that the dog’s face suggested he was thinking, “hello, where did you go without me?”
Pet cameras have become an increasingly popular tool for owners to keep tabs on their pets while they’re out, especially for those with rather mischievous pups. Statista estimates that the pet monitoring camera market was worth approximately 54.3 million U.S. dollars in 2022, but that figure is expected to grow significantly in the years to come. By 2033, Statista predicts that it could increase to around 93.5 million dollars.
The viral video has generated over 90 comments on TikTok in just a matter of days as social media users lauded the dog’s stern expression, while others shared photos of their own pets staring diligently at the pet cam too. Indeed, Allie wrote in a TikTok comment that she swears “they know when [you’re] checking on them.”
One comment on the post reads: “he really said, ‘I know you been watching me, you ain’t slick anymore’.”
Another TikTok user wrote: “It’s giving: mom you better be coming home asap.”
Another commenter replied: “It’s past your curfew mom, get home now.”
While one person jested: “Human you said you’d be home at 5, you lied.”
