A Reddit user’s heartwarming discovery has captured the attention of animal lovers after a routine search for a second dog led to an unexpected family reunion.
In a post shared on Saturday, Redditor u/SwankyGiraffe revealed that their Great Dane–German shepherd mix, Rex, had unknowingly been joined by his biological sibling.
The post included photos of the two gray Great Dane mixes looking nearly identical—same coloring, same energy, same big-dog goofiness.
In the caption, the owner described just how uncanny the resemblance was. “What are the odds?!?” the post begins, explaining that they adopted Rex around the same time last year and remembered him as a “goofy 90# Dane/GSD mix.”
When they began searching for a second dog, they turned to Petfinder and were shocked to see a new listing that looked exactly like Rex.
According to the caption, “I stalked Petfinder for a while and saw this listing pop up that looks JUST LIKE HIM.” The surprise didn’t end there—“Lo and behold, she’s listed at the shelter in a small town where we adopted Rex a year ago. What are the odds, right??”
The family went to meet the dog, instantly fell in love, and decided to bring her home. Once they did, the similarities only became more striking.
The Redditor wrote that the dogs enjoy the same activities, share the same habits, and even seem to express themselves in the same way. They described the new dog as a petite version of Rex, weighing in at about 60 pounds.
With so many parallels, the owner decided to confirm their suspicions. “So of course we’ve sent off an Embark test,” they wrote, adding that they couldn’t shake the feeling that the two dogs were more than just lookalikes. “But how many Great Dane/GSD mixes are there in the same small town at any given random time?”
The results arrived this week—and they were even more astonishing than expected. The caption celebrated the big reveal: “Anyway, we got the results yesterday and THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY SIBLINGS!!!!! I’m not insane. I’m so excited. I’m obsessed. I love them. I wanted to tell people who might get it.”
While in this rare case the poster was lucky that her pups were family and seemed to recognize each other almost immediately, this is not the norm, and when bringing home a second dog, both pups will usually need time to adjust.
Introducing dogs should be done gradually to help them feel safe and build positive associations. The first meeting should occur in a neutral outdoor location where neither dog feels territorial. Both dogs should wear secure collars or harnesses and be kept on standard leashes, while retractable leashes are discouraged.
Handlers should pay close attention to body language, as signs such as stiff posture, staring, raised hackles, or growling may indicate stress or discomfort. Calm, relaxed behavior should be rewarded with praise or small treats.
A common method is parallel walking, where two people walk the dogs in the same direction while keeping them about 30 feet apart. As the dogs remain calm, the distance can gradually decrease. The dogs may also switch positions to sniff where the other walked.
Eventually, once both dogs appear relaxed, they can briefly greet and sniff each other before continuing the walk together. The process may require multiple sessions depending on the dogs’ comfort levels.
The wholesome story clearly resonated with the Reddit community. Since being shared, the post has received more than 443 upvotes and attracted 24 comments, with users celebrating the unlikely reunion and cheering on the newly reunited siblings.
One user, LoveAgainstTheSystem, commented: “This is the kind of story I needed right now! Thank you! Love those precious babies!!”
