Owner Gets Golden Retriever Puppy—Can’t Believe the Size Seven Months Later

A seven-month-old golden retriever’s reaction on the scale left his owners—and viewers—laughing, prompting a closer look at just how big the pup had gotten.

Pet parent Katie, who is known on TikTok as @barkstreetboys_, and her husband have raised multiple golden retrievers and currently own four, including Enzo and Rory—the newest additions to the family. She told Newsweek via TikTok that these puppies came from a breeder and that both dogs have been fed the same food since arriving home. But by month seven, Enzo had the family doing a double take.

In a January 22 TikTok clip, a scale is placed on the ground as Katie’s husband steps toward it, holding Enzo in his arms. After subtracting the husband’s weight, they learned Enzo weighed about 85 pounds. Meanwhile, Enzo gave a side-eye to the camera, looking annoyed and embarrassed that the angle made him appear bigger, as he was “bunched up like an accordion.”

Enzo’s size left the couple speechless, not because it was out of the ordinary, but rather interesting to see how the pups grew differently. Katie said Rory is a completely different build and weight. Meanwhile, the couple’s older two dogs are lighter than Enzo.

Katie assures Enzo is not overweight, but rather lean, considering his long legs, big paws and large head. He comes from a show line of golden retrievers, which means they are naturally stockier.

An article from Dogster last month states the average weight of show golden retrievers is between 75 and 85 pounds, compared to the 55 to 70 pounds for field goldens. Show goldens are specifically bred to “show off” the dog breed standards. They have long, wavy hair and lighter in color because dark shades are not ideal in competitions. Show goldens are bigger and stockier, with more block-shaped and square-shaped muzzles.

“They get regular vet checks, vaccines, and the vet has no concerns,” Katie said. “Puppies do tend to fill out, then shoot up.”

Since checking his size, Katie said they have transitioned Enzo’s food. He is currently getting a mix of puppy and adult food, which is weighed to ensure he does not overeat. Enzo, along with the rest of the couple’s dogs, receives supplements for their joints, as the breed is known for hip and joint issues.

Curious about how other puppies grow, Katie shared the video on TikTok. As of Monday, it had over 61,700 views, 1,286 likes, and 243 comments, with viewers cracking up at Enzo’s expression.

One user wrote: “A hecking chonk of love.”

A second user added: “What a big boy! He’s gorgeous!”

A third commented: “My show retriever is the same. Enormous.”

And a fourth posted: “As long as they’re happy & healthy, that’s all that matters.”
