Indoor Cat Just Found Out Other Felines Exist—Wasn’t Ready for It

A video of two cats staring out of their window in disbelief has gone viral on TikTok, earning over 91,000 views.

The text layered over the clip explains that Milo and Mila were “shook” after spotting another cat crossing the road outside their home.

The clip titled: “my indoor cats just discovered outside cats exist,” quickly resonated with viewers, many of whom shared strong opinions about whether cats should be kept indoors or allowed to roam freely.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Cats

Letting cats roam freely outside can give them more stimulation and exercise, but it also comes with risks. Outdoor cats are more likely to get injured or sick and can harm wildlife, especially birds and small animals. Because of this, experts in the U.S. and Canada often recommend keeping cats indoors, even though many owners still allow them outside.

In a large online survey of nearly 8,000 cat owners, just over half said they keep their cats indoors all the time. About four in 10 allowed some outdoor access, and around one in five let their cats go outside freely without supervision.

Researchers found that these decisions were influenced by factors such as the cat’s breed, sex, health and behavior, the home environment, and what owners believed about the benefits and downsides of outdoor life.

The study also found that many cats allowed to roam freely lacked basic safety measures like collars or microchips, highlighting the need for better education around keeping outdoor cats safe.

Viewers Share Strong Reactions

The viral clip sparked a flood of comments, with some viewers criticizing the idea of keeping cats indoors.

One user wrote: “Sorry, but they are animals not your children. their instincts are to roam.”

Another commented: “They are built different.”

A third added: “So sad that they are forced to stay inside, totally against their nature, don’t get cats if you can’t let them be cats. How cruel!!!”

Owner Pushes Back at Critics

The cats’ owner responded directly to several comments, defending her decision.

She wrote: “Who says they don’t come outside? and even if they don’t go outside my animal specialist says they are super healthy and happy and have a good life.”

When another user compared the cats to “a prisoner staring out the window at free people,” the owner replied: “Indoor cats live x3 longer than outdoor cats.”

According to U.K.-based charity Cats Protection, indoor cats live an average of about 14 years. While they face fewer risks from accidents, they are still prone to health issues linked to inactivity, such as obesity and diabetes.

Outdoor cats, if healthy and fully vaccinated, can live just as long, though they face different risks such as injury and disease. Overall, there is limited evidence that either an indoor or outdoor lifestyle leads to a significantly longer lifespan, with both carrying different welfare risks.
