A golden retriever’s determined effort to stop their owner from heading out the door for work has gained viral attention on TikTok, drawing laughter from hundreds of thousands of viewers online and sparking a fresh wave of appreciation for the breed’s famously affectionate personality.
The video, shared by the canine’s owner under @theycallmedwar on September 23, shows the golden retriever lying sprawled out in front of the front door, blocking their owner’s path with unwavering commitment. As the owner attempts to open the door, they are met with the full body weight of the stubborn dog, who refuses to budge.
“This is what it’s like trying to get out to go to work,” the owner is heard saying off-camera.
The video, captioned simply “golden life,” has since been viewed more than 218,000 times and liked over 32,000 times, with commenters sharing their amusement at the dog’s loyalty and sense of attachment.
The clip ends with the owner managing to open the door—dragging the golden retriever along with it—as their other pets enter the frame to see them off.
Golden retrievers are well known for their deep bonds with their owners, often showing signs of separation anxiety or reluctance when left alone. This viral moment struck a chord with many pet owners familiar with the breed’s affectionate and often clingy behavior.
“My golden does the same thing,” one viewer said.
“He doesn’t want you to leave,” another added.
“My 110lb Pyrenees does that,” a third viewer shared. “On carpet,” they added.
“I taught my dog excuse me and he will move from wherever because he loves to stand where you’re standing,” another commented.
“Dog’s like I don’t even care I’m going to sleep,” another said.
“I just love dogs,” another added. “They are the greatest.”
“I would send this to my boss saying I need to work from home,” a different viewer joked.
The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes golden retrievers as “friendly, intelligent and devoted,” a breed that thrives on companionship and human interaction. Their eagerness to please and sociable nature make them one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States.
