In a recent TikTok video, an owner explained to her dog what their future holds in an upcoming move from an apartment to a house with its very own backyard.
Olivia Steele rescued her dog, Grace Louise, through Last Hope K9 in 2018 when she lived in Massachusetts. Since then, the two besties have been living together in different apartments. But, as many owners know, living in an apartment with a dog isn't quite the same as being able to give them a backyard to call their own.
That dream of giving Grace Louise a yard recently became a reality when Steele became a first-time homeowner. She shared the good news with Grace Louise in an October 11 TikTok video posted to her account @oliviasteelemusic. She sat down, gently petting her dog as she explained their upcoming move.
"It's kind of small, but it's your very own yard," she said in the video.
The dog seemed to understand the news as a smile crept across her face toward the end of the video, looking back at Steele with approval. She started thinking about how she would soon be able to go in-and-out as much as she wanted without the hassle of being on a leash.
Being able to purchase her first home not just for her but for Grace Louise meant everything to Steele. Her dog has been "one of the greatest things" to happen to her and providing Grace Louise with this opportunity only felt right.
"It's no secret that the economy and our housing market has been very difficult for young people to get into," Steele told Newsweek via email. "I was fortunate enough to be able to buy a starter home and it felt like a dream come true."
When asked about Grace Louise's reaction to the new yard, Steele said, "I wasn't sure how she was going to react honestly, she's pretty shy and reserved in new places so I wouldn't have been surprised or upset if she didn't seem all that crazy about it initially, but I was so grateful when she took to it right away!"
Since then, Grace Louise can't get enough of the place she calls her own. She hangs out in the yard every day, working on her "stick collection," as Steele calls it.
TikTok Users React
Users on the social media platform melted over Steele and her dog's precious interaction, with the TikTok video amassing over 288,200 views and 37,400 likes as of Saturday.
"Giving my dogs a yard of their own was one of the proudest moments of my life. Congratulations!!" one TikTok user wrote.
Another added: "Congratulations on your purchase! I hope you and your dog enjoy this upgrade."
A third user jokingly shared: "Did the same for my boy, but he still expects the walks. His yard is for sunbathing, other people yards are for pooping."
