A dog owner from Germany came home from training expecting his dog to greet him at the door—what the pup did instead has left internet users in stitches.
In a viral video shared on Instagram last Tuesday by the owner, under the username @jakein.de, the pup, a yellow Labrador retriever named Jake, can be seen sitting down right by the door, giving his owner the side-eye as he steps inside.
“I came home hoping my dog would greet me,” the caption says. “Instead what I got horrified me! He didn’t greet me, which was very unusual. And then I saw why.”
The clip goes on to show the poster’s garbage scattered all around the house, as a result of his dog messing it all up while scavenging.
“I could not say a word… All we did was communicate in silence,” the caption continues. “Who thinks he is not guilty?”
The poster, 33-year-old Mohit, told Newsweek that before leaving he had left the garbage bin in the hallways to take with him on his way out, but he then forgot about it, and left the house without it. It was at that point that his pup decided to take care of it for him, just not in the right way.
It’s not unusual for dogs to dive in the garbage bin, even when fresh food is available. But what is it about garbage that attracts them so much?
According to Vetstreet, dogs often eat strange things out of the garbage because many items still smell like food, which is a strong incentive for them. Even when garbage doesn’t contain edible items, the smell of it can still attract a dog, and some dogs enjoy chewing certain textures.
In some cases, dogs may dig in the garbage just for fun, treating it like a puzzle toy. Occasionally, this behavior can signal something more serious. For example, some dogs only dive into the garbage when owners are absent, which may indicate anxiety.
In other cases, medical conditions or medications that increase appetite or cause stomach upset may drive a dog to search for and eat garbage.
The video quickly went viral on social media and it has so far received over 1.5 million views and 71,600 likes on the platform.
One user, Minandrob, commented: “Definitely not guilty! The bin emptied itself, I saw it!!! He is innocent.”
