A couple’s temporary move to Alaska came with an unexpected surprise: they accidentally ended up adopting a new cat who, as it turned out, was already pregnant.

The pair shared their story on Reddit, where it quickly gained traction, earning over 2,400 upvotes in the “Cat Distribution System” community.

The poster, u/kadylady14, said: “My boyfriend and I moved to Alaska for 6 months. This cat kept showing up and meowing. We already had 2 cats, but who am I to say no??? So Trailer Kitty became ours.

“A few vet visits later, we find out she is pregnant. 3 has now become 4. Trailer gave birth to the most perfect little nugget on Nov. 15. What do y’all think about names?” the Reddit user wrote.

My lucky day was when Trailer showed up. My luckier day was when she gave birth. Name ideas?

What To Know When Taking in a Pregnant Stray

According to the Nature Network, binging a pregnant stray cat into your home requires a bit of preparation. Experts recommend first offering a quiet, secure space where the cat can decompress and feel safe. A veterinary checkup is essential—not only to confirm the pregnancy, but also to screen for parasites, infections, or any underlying health issues.

Pregnant cats need high-quality nutrition, ideally kitten food, which supports both their health and the growth of the litter. As the due date approaches, it is helpful to create a comfortable nesting area lined with soft blankets in a low-traffic part of the home. While most cats are capable of giving birth without intervention, owners should still monitor for signs of distress and contact a vet if anything seems unusual.

Introducing the new mother to existing pets should happen gradually and only once she feels settled. Patience and a calm environment go a long way—especially for a stray adjusting to indoor life while preparing to raise kittens.

Reddit’s Reaction

As always, the “Cat Distribution System” community had plenty of thoughts—and name ideas—for the newborn kitten.

“Hitch. Whatever you name this sweetheart, I love this story,” said one user.

“Perfect name, lol [laugh out loud]! Trailer and Hitch,” added another.

“I love this so much! Also—what a wee baby peanut. So cute! Mom, too,” wrote a third commenter.

“Stick with Nugget. It’s perfect. She/he is a precious Nugget of joy and a cherished member of your delightful family,” shared one user.

“A one kitten litter? Fascinating. Perhaps ‘Lucky’ would be fitting,” added another.

“Look at her hugging her tiny baby!! She’s so proud of herself for making a perfect little replica,” one commenter said.

“Nugget honors the beautiful gold nuggets found in Alaska, could be a lovely reminder of your time there,” another user pointed out.
