Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has shared a message on Instagram following the opening weekend of his new film, “The Smashing Machine.” The post came after the Mark Kerr biopic recorded the lowest box office debut of Johnson’s acting career.
The film, which had a production budget of $50 million, earned $6 million during its opening weekend. This number fell short of the projected opening range of $8 million to $15 million.
The movie finished third in the weekend box office rankings. It was behind a Taylor Swift documentary, which earned over $33 million, and the war drama “One Battle After Another,” which secured $11 million.
A report from Variety noted that the film’s debut was the lowest of Johnson’s career, falling below the $8.5 million opening of his 2010 thriller, Faster.
In his social media post, Johnson reflected on the results. He focused on his commitment to the performance rather than the commercial numbers.

“In our storytelling world, you can’t control box office results – but what I realized you can control is your performance, and your commitment to completely disappear and go elsewhere,” he wrote.
Johnson also thanked director Benny Safdie and said that making the film has changed his life. Despite the low box office, the film has received favorable reviews from critics and audiences, holding a 74% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
While Johnson navigates the results of his passion project in Hollywood, the WWE landscape he influenced at WrestleMania continues to evolve. For now, Rock and A24 will have to see how the second week goes for its latest film.
