When a passerby spotted two dogs roaming loose, he decided to do the responsible thing and alert their owners—but his good deed came with an unexpectedly loud welcome.
In a recent Instagram video posted by @shepherd.sisterss, a doorbell camera captured the moment a stranger approached the home to let the residents know their two dogs were out. Just after he rang the bell, two German shepherds approached barking at him, prompting him to curse under his breath and carefully retreat through the snow.
The dog owners felt horrible for how terrified he must’ve been in that situation. Despite their big voices and large size, the dogs’ owner, Liz Piercy, says the pair are far more cuddly than they appear on camera. She calls them “the biggest teddy bears.” They just like to alert the household.
“Our one dog Aurora, the black and tan bigger dog that was barking, always barks when she hears the doorbell ring,” Piercy told Newsweek via email. “Venus, the darker puppy, is still a baby. She doesn’t bark, but she was funny following Aurora there too!”
The dogs accidentally escaped after the back gate flew open, which had never happened in the two years of owning them, Piercy shared in the comments section of the Instagram video.
But even with that freedom to roam, the dogs kept their distance, sounding the alarm like an enthusiastic neighborhood watch group. They did not step toward the man as he backtracked.
Barking at the door is typical behavior for the breed. German shepherds are known for being alert and protective, which is why they are often used as working, service and guard dogs. Trainers say that with proper training and socialization, they are also affectionate, loyal and well-suited to family life.
“My husband was home and spoke to the gentleman!” Piercy said. “He was very nice, happened to be driving by and noticed our dogs got out so he wanted to make sure they were safe!”

Within two days, the Instagram video had reached over 685,000 views and 137 comments. Some viewers felt horrible for how scared the man seemed, while others hilariously pointed out how he was walking in the snow with flip-flops.
One user wrote: “This is so perfect. Aurora and Venus said, ‘Mind your business and put some shoes on, Mister.'”
Another user jokingly posted: “They said, ‘We know we are out. Now leave.'”
And a third commented: “He cared very much. So very sweet.”
