LeBron James has etched his name among NBA greats with many achievements and record-breaking performances throughout his career, including a historic scoring streak that officially ended this season.
On “Mind the Game,” featuring NBA great Steve Nash, the two-time MVP mentioned LeBron’s streak of scoring 10 points or more ended at 1,297 games. He called it LeBron’s “floor” for scoring and said it was “insane” to think about how he’d achieved that.
Nash asked LeBron if he felt that would continue for the rest of his career, but the Lakers star indicated the streak wasn’t all that significant to him.
“I mean, for me, it was never even a thought, and once people start talking about it more every day, obviously, human nature kicks in,” he told Nash.
King James admitted that he likes to check on his stats at halftime to see how many turnovers he’s had and how good or bad his shooting percentage is, because he wants to be efficient.
“I’d be lying if I said I don’t know how many points I have at any given moment in the game, but I never went into the game during the streak, saying, ‘Okay, I have to get 10 points,'” he told Nash, adding, “It would be a disservice to me and the way I play the game.”
He emphasized that the more significant aspect he’s concerned with in each game is making the best plays possible and winning, rather than what stats he has or records he might break.
“Listen, I’ve done some incredible things in my career, and to be able to have a streak, to be able to be mentioned with some of the greats, to be able to live out my dream, it’s all just like, it’s surreal to me,” LeBron said.
“The one thing that is always going to be common for me is just making the right play,” he said.
Interestingly enough, that occurred when he opted to dish the ball to teammate Rui Hachimura for a game-winning shot instead of taking it himself. That game against the Toronto Raptors, on Dec. 4, was when LeBron’s historic scoring streak came to an end in his legendary career.
Despite injuries affecting their roster, including James and fellow star Luka Doncic, this season’s Lakers team appears to be on track towards another postseason appearance. They’re currently 19-8 as they head into a matchup at the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday evening.
The goal remains to capture another championship, as LeBron continues to add to his legacy before ultimately retiring from the game he loves.
