Social media users are obsessed with a golden retriever’s dramatic reaction to being placed on a diet, and it has left everyone saying the same thing.

A golden retriever named Brew has gone viral for a hilariously over-the-top response to being put on a diet—proving once again that dogs will do anything for a snack. The video, shared on January 14 on his TikTok account @brewthegoldenn, shows the disgruntled pup lying next to his empty food bowl at 11 p.m., staring pointedly in protest after his portions were slightly reduced.

According to his owner, the vet suggested Brew was looking “a little bit chunky,” prompting a tiny adjustment to his meals. But, based on his sulky performance caught on camera, Brew is not handling the change well.

The relatable moment has struck a chord with dog lovers everywhere. At the time of writing, the TikTok video has racked up over 182,000 views and more than 31,000 likes, with thousands more watching Brew’s snack-time meltdown each hour.

Newsweek has contacted @brewthegoldenn via TikTok for comment. We could not verify the details of the video.

In the caption alongside the video, Brew’s owner joked that the golden retriever was “so mad” and “not happy about it.” She explained during the clip that she had only decreased his food by 2 grams, but judging by his dramatic display, “he’s feeling those 2 grams.”

While Brew’s dismay may be amusing, ensuring the correct feeding amount is an important part of canine health. Experts at website PetMD say that dogs should be fed based on factors such as age, weight, activity level, and body condition. Overfeeding can easily lead to obesity, which increases the risk of serious health issues, while underfeeding can cause nutritional deficiencies.

Golden retrievers—known for their hearty appetites—especially benefit from precise portion control. Feeding charts for the breed indicate that adult goldens typically require 3 to 3.5 cups of food per day, depending on sex, weight, and energy levels. Owners are also encouraged to use measuring cups or even scales to ensure accuracy, particularly when monitoring weight.

What Did TikTok Users Say?

Since going viral, the video has gathered more than 130 comments, with viewers quick to laud the golden retriever’s displeasure. Many empathized with Brew’s late-night hunger pains, while others rushed to defend him and insist he needs more snacks.

It is clear from the comments that internet viewers have taken Brew’s side (even if the vet may disagree). Whether or not he gets those extra 2 grams of food back, the golden retriever has already earned the unwavering sympathy of millions who know the struggles of dieting.

One comment reads: “I can’t wait for his POV [point of view] complaining about this.”

Another TikTok user defended the dog’s weight gain, as they wrote: “It’s his winter body, leave the boy alone. He’s just trying to stay warm…and full.”

A third person said: “He looks like he’s fed up already.”

One commenter joked: “He’s withering away!”
