Thrift stores may be filled with unwanted items in need of a new beginning, but one woman was rendered speechless after making a sentimental discovery from her 1989 wedding.
Victoria Post, 32, was thrifting with her mom, Theresa (who doesn’t wish to share her full name) in Farmingville, New York, when they were treated to some nostalgia. While they were perusing the rails of dresses, Theresa pulled out a formal dress that features a black bodice and a white tulle skirt.
This was not the first time she had seen the dress, however, as it actually held a significant meaning.
Post was admiring the dress her mom had found at first but was stunned when she learned it was the same garment the bridesmaids wore to her mother’s 1989 wedding. Post, who resides in Long Island, never imagined they would uncover something so important at the thrift, telling Newsweek that she was “shocked to find it 30 years later.”
“It is the exact dress my mom’s bridesmaids wore, but not literally one of their dresses because it was such a popular style back then,” Post said. “We truly thought one of her bridesmaids donated their dress, and, when I posted the video, we didn’t realize how much this dress resonated with other people for so many of their occasions.”
The dress was being sold at the thrift store for $150 when Post and her mom found it (more than its price in 1989). They would have loved to have bought the dress when they found it recently, but the pair didn’t want to spend more than $50 for the throwback item.
Nonetheless, when Post and her mom returned to see it days later, the dress had been sold.
Post couldn’t resist sharing a video on TikTok (@victoriasposts) of the moment her mom discovered the dress. Internet users can’t get enough of the incredible moment, leading to more than 3.9 million views and over 506,000 likes on TikTok at the time of writing.
The caption alongside the clip jokes that Post and her mom “need to play Lotto” if this is the kind of luck they have. The social media reaction to the video is beyond anything Post expected, as she had no idea the dress held such a sentimental value to so many people.
“I wasn’t expecting it to be this popular, but the video gained a lot of traction,” Post said. “We went back to try and find it when our video blew up, but no luck. Maybe someone saw the video and purchased it.”
Since it was shared on February 22, the viral TikTok video has gained over 320 comments as many people shared their reactions to the shock realization.
One comment reads: “My mom’s bridesmaids had the same dress! I had to show her this.”
Another TikTok user wrote: “I wore that as a bridesmaid in the late ‘80s.”
One commenter joked: “I’d buy it. Then send the picture to all the bridesmaids and demand to know who sold it lol [laugh out loud].”
