Before he and his brother won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Alex Fitzpatrick didn’t have his PGA Tour card.
Just three months after winning the event with older brother Matthew Fitzpatrick, he not only had his PGA Tour card, but also had four top-10 finishes. After finishing tied for 23rd at the U.S. Open, he entered the Open Championship on the back of his second-best effort in a major.
Following the first two rounds of the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England, he sat at four-under and just four shots off the lead before everything went terribly wrong.
Fitzpatrick struggled mightily over the weekend, carding a three-over, 73 on Saturday and a seven-over, 77 on Sunday to catapult down the leaderboard and finish at six-over for the tournament.
“It was crap. No two ways about it. My putting was woeful. I thought some of the pins yesterday were terrible, just brutally honest. And, yeah, mixed with me not playing very good at all, that’s what it is,” he said after his round.
Following his poor finish, Fitzpatrick will be taking the next two weeks off.
“No, I’m having two weeks off. I’m putting the clubs away and having a good reset and actually enjoy my life,” he said.
