Sunday was supposed to be Timothée Chalamet‘s Super Bowl.
“Marty Supreme” was the project the 30-year-old thought would take him to the top of the acting world and deliver him an Oscar for best performance.
When it came out to rave reviews in December, it felt like the race for Best Actor at the Academy Awards was over. From his outrageous promotional campaign that took over the internet to the rave reviews from fans and critics alike, it seemed like a lock.
Chalamet was going to be the new king of Hollywood.
But that wasn’t the case on Sunday, as Chalamet watched Michael B. Jordan‘s performance in “Sinners” win him the honor of Best Actor.
It was a sudden shift in the race that began during awards season, when Chalamet went from frontrunner to underdog over the past three months.
As the show got closer, Chalamet’s odds began to plummet even further.
Following the announcement of the victor, social media went wild over what a few months ago would have seemed impossible.
“Chalamet totally slays in Marty Supreme, but there’s a ton of hype because he’s Hollywood’s current golden boy, super media-friendly way before any real cinematic chops,” one poster said on X. “Saying he’s outshone Jordan or DiCaprio just shows you don’t know jack [expletive] about movies. I’m laying it out that plain.”
“After watching Marty Supreme and Sinners, I was BLOWN away that Timothy Chalamet was winning awards season until the Actors Awards,” posted another person on X. “Michael B Jordan won the biggest one on the biggest stage, and it’s SO well deserved. Thank goodness for ballet and opera.”
Chalamet has been under fire in recent weeks for his comments that no one today is interested in the ballet or opera industry, which came to a head at tonight’s show, with even host Conan O’Brien making fun of his opinion.
“If Chalamet would’ve just shut up for a few months, he’d have an Oscar,” said Chris Castellani, a Detroit sports blogger and movie buff. “Good for Michael B. Jordan. Been one of the coolest actors in Hollywood for a long time.
Although we’ll never know how much Chalamet’s campaign trail might have hurt his odds at winning the Oscar, tonight doesn’t belong to him.
Michael B. Jordan marked his place in history with Sunday’s golden triumph.
