Duke’s roster has been in flux throughout the offseason, with several notable losses and key decisions still looming.
Former five-star guard Nikolas Khamenia entered the transfer portal and has since committed to UConn, while sophomore wing Darren Harris also transferred to Indiana after a limited role in Jon Scheyer’s system.
Up front, Maliq Brown exhausted his eligibility, and superstar freshman Cameron Boozer is widely expected to declare for the NBA Draft, creating a major scoring void.
At the same time, Duke has retained pieces like Patrick Ngongba and Cayden Boozer, and continues to explore portal additions. Now, the move that could define Duke’s offseason has arrived.
Wisconsin transfer John Blackwell has committed to Duke, giving the Blue Devils one of the most coveted guards in the portal.
Coming out of high school, Blackwell wasn’t viewed as a can’t-miss, blue-chip prospect. He arrived at Wisconsin as a mere three-star recruit outside the national top-200, far from the typical Duke pipeline.
By his sophomore season, however, he had already emerged as a key piece for the Badgers, averaging 15.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 31.2 minutes per game while starting all 37 games and shooting 45.1% from the field.
Last season, he took another leap, posting a career-high 19.2 points per game to go with 5.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists, while shooting 43% from the field and 38.9% from deep on his way to third-team All-Big Ten honors.
Blackwell had just nine offers coming out of high school. Three years later, he was one of the most dangerous guards in college basketball.
As a result, he was a top-three overall transfer and arguably the most complete scoring guard available.
Blackwell gives Duke a proven scorer, a seasoned presence, and a player capable of carrying offensive stretches against elite competition.
He’s not a pure point guard, but his ability to operate in multiple roles gives Scheyer flexibility, especially alongside returning guards like Cayden Boozer and potentially Caleb Foster.
At a time when Duke needed a go-to perimeter option, this is a direct hit.
