An owner who lives in a van with her Chihuahua in Australia visited her parents after six months apart, but no time away could make her dog forget his grandparents.
In an April 4 TikTok video posted to the account @emma_and_luigi, the owner, Emma, began filming her dog, Luigi, sitting in the passenger seat of her van. As they pulled into her parents’ housing complex, Luigi placed his paws on the door, peering intently out the window. He scanned the area as memories seemed to rush back. He recognized instantly that this was where his favorite people lived.
The closer they got to the house, the more Luigi danced with excitement, spinning in circles, and his tail wagged rapidly. Emma’s parents greeted them at the van door when they parked, but her dad reached for the dog first. Knowing the priority of seeing their granddoggo, she handed Luigi to him through the window.
Living on the road, Luigi often doesn’t return to the same place twice, making his instant recognition even more remarkable.
Emma wrote in a comment that her dad walked away while she jokingly said, “Oh, hello, Dad.”
Luigi appeared to be in heaven, finally reunited after what felt like a lifetime apart from his favorite people, even though he spent two months with his grandparents, who traveled alongside them in a separate van. And they missed him just as much, showering him with endless pets and kisses.

Research suggests moments like Luigi’s reaction may be linked to how dogs store memories tied to specific locations.
A 2019 study published in the Journal of Comparative Psychology found that dogs have episodic-like memory, meaning they can recall what happened, where it happened and when. In the study, dogs successfully identified scents based on both location and timing, showing they can piece together past experiences rather than rely on simple habit.
The findings suggest dogs form layered memories, connecting places with the people, smells and emotions associated with them, which could explain Luigi’s reaction as the van entered the complex. The familiar environment may have triggered a memory not just of the place, but of the people he loves who live there.
